I stumbled across the YouTube lecture below I think through a TruthOut.org article and learned about Professor Baptist's book The Half Has Never Been Told, Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism. The talk was given at Google's Cambridge office and includes a great question and answer which provides more info on Dr. Baptist's work including digital database of runaway slave ads.
